SC Tax Problems
South Carolina adopted the federal system of income taxation, but applies a flat rate of tax to higher incomes, instead of the alternative minimum tax. This can result in tax problems for many tax payers, resulting in higher tax payments than what is legally required.
The IRS keeps individual records of income and withholding, but the state of SC does not, leading to excessive taxation in some cases.
Some statutes benefitting taxpayers must be specifically claimed by individuals to assert taxpayer rights.
